5 Commitments of an ETYSA Junior Race Team Member

Being a member of the ETYSA Junior Racing Team is a privilege. Every sailor represents themselves, their teammates, their coaches, Blackbeard Sailing Club, and ETYSA. Our goal is to create a safe, supportive, and competitive environment where every sailor can learn, improve, and enjoy the sport. ETYSA sailors are expected to be safe, respectful, coachable, responsible, and supportive teammates. These values guide everything we do on and off the water.

As a member of this team, I agree to the following commitments.

1. Safety First

Safety is always my highest priority. I will:

  • Never intentionally do anything that could cause harm to myself, another person, or any boat or equipment.
  • Follow the instructions of coaches and race officials immediately.
  • Wear required safety equipment.
  • Tell a coach or responsible adult as soon as practical if I believe someone is unsafe or equipment is damaged or unsafe.

No race, drill, or practice is ever more important than safety.

2. Show Respect

I will treat everyone—including my teammates, competitors, coaches, race officials, volunteers, parents, and club members—with courtesy and respect. I will:

  • Use appropriate language and behavior.
  • Encourage others instead of putting them down.
  • Accept coaching with a positive attitude.
  • Win with humility and lose with grace.
  • Never intentionally do anything that reflects poorly on my teammates, coaches, ETYSA, or Blackbeard Sailing Club.

3. Be a Great Teammate

I will:

  • Support and encourage my teammates.
  • Arrive on time, prepared, and ready to learn.
  • Give my best effort during practices and regattas.
  • Help care for boats, sails, dollies, and other equipment.
  • Report damaged equipment immediately.
  • Leave the sailing facility better than I found it.

4. Demonstrate Good Sportsmanship

I understand that how I compete is just as important as how I finish. I will:

  • Sail fairly and honestly.
  • Follow the Racing Rules of Sailing and the instructions of race officials.
  • Respect competitors from every club.
  • Learn from mistakes and maintain a positive attitude.
  • Remember that improvement and teamwork are more important than winning.

5. Represent ETYSA with Pride

Whether I am at practice, at a regatta, traveling with the team, or posting online, I represent ETYSA. I will conduct myself in a manner that makes my teammates, coaches, parents, and club proud.
